Creating an effective title can seem quite challenging. A effective title can make your paper stand out from the pile and give your reader a sense of the content, and perspective of your essay. To create a catchy title, you need to focus on three elements of creating a title. They include the hook, the source or location and the key terms.

  1. Creating The Hook

Most titles have the same basic structure. The hook is the creative element that draws the reader in. the title should be a catchy phrase that lets the reader know what the essay is going to focus on.

  1. Choose One Or Two Key Terms

These comprise of important words or phrases that apply to your topic and give your reader a sense of the content and angle of your paper. These key terms should act like a brief to your essay word summary. Note that good titles never state the obvious or contain generic terms or phrases. Avoid general and non-specific terms like “society” “culture” “the world” or “mankind” in your title.

  1. Cite The Source Or Location

This tells the reader where the content is located or what the setting of the essay will be. Your source material may be another piece of writing, the name of a text, a geographic place, or a person depending on your topic.

  1. Sum Up Your Paper In Three Words Or Less

You can sum up the thesis of your essay in three words or less. Write down the three words then check if you can place commas or colons between them to create a title.

  1. Choose Two Or Three Keywords From Your Introduction Or Conclusion

Traditional five paragraph essays consist of an introduction that includes a thesis and the general ideas of the essay. Your conclusion also restates your thesis and sums up your analysis. Both sections may be a good place to find keywords that could result to a strong essay title.

  1. Use A Strange Or Unique Image

You can use the description of an image, which will give your reader a visual that will then frame the rest of the essay. Think of a striking or bold image that you can sum up in one to three words.

  1. Reword A Cliché

Think of a common phrase or sentence, also known as a cliché, and reword it so it is specific to your essay for a catchy title. Use short clichés or familiar phrases that have one to three words long.
