Assessment Task 1: Learning Project – Preceptorship and professional development– Marking Rubric
The purpose of this assessment is to get you thinking about the positive influence a preceptor can have on your professional development, and things you can do to ensure the preceptorship model works for you.

Details of task: This assessment task requires you to submit a reflective report on the role of preceptorship on professional development.
Consider the role preceptors have played in your professional development during clinical placement as a nursing student.
Outline the elements that contributed to a successful preceptor / preceptee relationship, and those that did not work so well, making a link between your experience and the literature around preceptorship.
Finally, outline the strategies you will use to ensure you make the most of your preceptor as a graduate nurse. Find literature to support your ideas.
Your paper should demonstrate the reflective process, for example:
• Use of the Gibbs reflective cycle
o OR
• Objective description of what happened
• Subjective evaluation (what I thought, how I felt)
• Analysis (making sense of the clinical experiences in the learning environment)
• Conclusion or alternatives (what else could have been done, what does the literature say?)
• Learning (e.g. How has this experience prepared me for professional practice? If there were any issues or concerns with my preceptorship, how could I have managed it better? If similar experiences arise again, what might I do? Is there anything I need to do before starting my graduate year? How have I changed?)
Objectives:
This assignment is looking to see that:
• You understand the role of the preceptor and what makes an effective preceptor/learner relationship,
• you can reflect on your own experiences and learn from them, and
• that you can relate these experiences to theories, concepts and ideas from the literature.
Consider the role of the preceptor and the role of the student in this relationship and what factors influence this relationship both positively and negatively.
You should critically reflect on your own actions and how the experience of working with different preceptor styles has impacted on your overall learning, professional clinical development, and understanding of professional relationships. Make links between your experience of preceptorship, and the elements discussed in the literature.
Your report should include sections identified by headings and subheadings, including:
• Introduction to the report
• Reflections ( I have include it in the next file) on two specific events that occurred, which highlight different (positive or negative) aspects of the preceptorship role, and the impact on your subsequent clinical placements. Your reflections should demonstrate a structured reflective process, using one of the two frameworks described below:
o Framework 1:
? Objective description of what happened (Third person; include brief background what, where, when – then present the key aspects of the event)
? Subjective evaluation (what I thought, how I felt about the event )
? Analysis (what worked well, what didn’t work – and why)
? Conclusions or alternatives (What else could have been done? What does the literature say?)
? Implications for my practice (What have I learned from this experience? How has this prepared me for practice?)

o Framework 2: You can follow the Gibbs reflective cycle.
• Brief overall discussion comparing the two reflections (What was similar about your role, the preceptor, the outcomes?; what was different? What have you learned? Which aspects of preceptorship are the most important/beneficial? How will the collective experiences make you a better nurse? How will your findings contribute to your future role as a preceptor? )
• Recommendations (What three pieces of advice would you give to a nursing student about to enter their graduate year, relating to taking on the role of preceptor, based on what you have learned here? These can be presented as bullet points, with brief explanations, and at least one reference/piece of ‘further reading’ for each).
• Overall conclusion (Brief summary/reminder of what you were addressing in the report, what your answer was, why preceptorship is an important component of learning in the clinical environment.)
• Reference list (you should aim to integrate appropriate information or ideas from at least 12 peer-reviewed journal articles into your paper)

Note: questions suggested are examples – you do not necessarily need to answer all of them for each section.

Some tips:
Much of the report will be written in the third person, and will incorporate references to literature.

Assignment presentation guidelines
• Use A4 paper typed on one side only.
• Leave a 4 cm margin on the left side of the page with double line spacing.
• Pages should be numbered and your ID number should be on each and stapled together.
• Do not use plastic pockets, folders, etc. They will not be returned.
• Attach an assignment cover sheet. Submitted assignments with no cover sheet will not be marked.
• You may use subheadings to develop your paper and ensure you address each question
• If a paper is submitted which exceeds the word count by more than 10%, the marker will stop reading at the required word count, and no further content will be marked.
Marking guide
Introduction:
• Provides an overview of the content, background, essay question and what will be discussed.
• Introduction defines the scope, and key ideas of the essay. Focus question is introduced and easily identified. Sources of information are cited where appropriate. Appropriate length
Discussion:
• Compares the two (2) reflections and discusses these in relationship to preceptorship
• Relevant concepts identified. Logical build-up of relevant content. Strong links between reflection outcomes and preceptorship discussion.
• Comprehensive and detailed analysis of preceptorship and the implementation in the workplace. Clear and analytical indication of how findings will contribute to future preceptorship roles. Appropriate and current literature has been incorporated to support ideas and analysis presented.
Recommendations for future practice:
• Three (3) pieces of advice that you would give to nursing students about to enter their graduate year based on what you have learned
• Advice for future practice is logical, relevant and clear. Concise, analytical and evidence based discussion used to support recommendations. Sound knowledge of topic is demonstrated. Recommendations are based on own experience from reflections.
Conclusion:
• Summary of the main points the reader needs to know. Take home messages.
• Conclusion summarises key points and ideas included in the body, based on literature. No new material. Conclusion leaves the reader with a clear take home message.
Academic writing: Clear, concise formal writing is used and critique paragraphs to effectively convey information and ideas to the reader.
• Fluent writing style appropriate to assignment. Essay is easy to follow and understand. Grammar and spelling accurate. Written in formal, clear English with very few grammatical, spelling and structural errors. Work within the word count. Formatting meets submission guidelines. Jargon and technical terms are defined and
